The Fall of Richmond

Join Classical Revolution's 2022 Featured composer, Curt Sydnor, for the public premiere of the chamber symphony, The Fall of Richmond.

The Fall of Richmond evokes the turmoil and exultation which overtook Richmond on April 2-4,1865 as Confederate forces burned and abandoned the city. Composed in Richmond during the protests of 2020, the work is an ode to the US Colored Troops regiment which led the march into Richmond, to President Lincoln’s famous visit the following day, and to the concurrent liberation of Richmond’s enslaved population.

Gallery 5’s stage backdrop and historic walls will be illuminated with projections of Richmond’s ruins (as photographed by Matthew Brady and others) to create an immersive musical-historical environment. Conductor Naima Burrs will lead the nine-piece ensemble comprised of Richmond’s finest classical musicians, including members of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra. The program will also include premiers of Sydnor’s Chaconne for violin, bass, and piano and a song setting for chamber ensemble featuring Laura Ann Singh.

For Virginia music lovers, this one-time event is not to be missed.

The event is FREE and open to all ages! Donations encouraged.

Doors open at 6:40, music starts at 7:00pm.

We hope to see you there!
